Intrigued by the magical formula, the medieval friar Roger Bacon makes a bigger bang by confining the black powder inside a tube. "When the flame of powder catcheth the soul of man" he noted, "it burneth exceeding deep" Since then the power and excitement of fireworks have proved a constant draw for crowds and associated with celebrations everywhere.
